Sam Houston announced the addition of two future football games on Wednesday, including a game at UCF on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024. That is a date that Liberty was previously expected to play against Central Florida, as it appears that game has either been moved to another season or canceled altogether.
With Liberty’s move to Conference USA beginning with the 2023 season, the Flames must purge their schedule to make room for eight conference games. This schedule change can be added to the growing list of games moved or canceled for Liberty as they make this move, including games against North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia Southern, Miami (OH), and Virginia.
Like Liberty, Sam Houston is also making the move to Conference USA as they move up to the FBS ranks from the FCS. Doing so, they need to build out full FBS schedules with non-conference games to go in addition to their conference games. The Flames have been working with Sam Houston and Jacksonville State to help them add games while taking some off Liberty’s future slates.
With the move of the UCF game, Liberty currently has games scheduled in 2024 against Coastal Carolina, Ball State, Marshall, Texas State, and Campbell, and road trips to Eastern Michigan, Appalachian State, and UMass, in addition to what will become CUSA games against FIU and New Mexico State. Several more games must be moved from the 2024 slate to make room for eight conference games and just four non-conference dates.
