Liberty and VCU, who concluded a home-and-home series last year, will be reunited to help victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. The Flames and Rams will play an exhibition game at the Siegel Center in Richmond next Thursday, October 26th at 7pm. Tickets will be $15, and will go on sale Friday, October 20th at 9am.
Exhibition games, for which admission is charged, must be against Division II opponents or lower; however, the NCAA has granted a waiver allowing several schools to participate in these ticketed events to benefit various charities. The Flames’ starting point guard, Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz, is a native of of Puerto Rico, and his family was directly impacted by Hurricane Maria.
Liberty, which opens the season on November 10th against Clarks Summit, will also play host for the 2017 Paradise Jam that has been relocated from St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands due to Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. In conjunction with the Paradise Jam tournament in Lynchburg, Liberty University will donate all of the tournament gate receipts to the humanitarian relief efforts in the U.S. Virgin Islands in order to assist with the recovery due to the hurricane destruction.
