Liberty vs Tennessee State Storylines
FLAMES TRYING TO FIND THEIR GROOVE AGAIN
Liberty started the season on a roll, winning its first six games of the year that included some notable wins over strong mid-major programs such as Furman, Wichita State, and Vermont. The Flames did that with a high-powered offense that was very efficient shooting, specifically behind the three-point line.
Over the past four games, the Flames have dropped three contests. Of course, Liberty has been playing some strong competition in those games, losing to very good mid-major teams in FAU, Charleston, and Grand Canyon.
One thing of note, in Liberty’s first six games, the Flames lowest shooting percentage from three in a game was 35%. Over the past four games, LU has been below 35% in all four – FAU (32%), Charleston (32.3%), MVSU (25.9%), GCU (24%). It may not be as simple as shoot a better percentage from three and win, but it is certainly a big factor.
TENNESSEE STATE COMING OFF MATCHUPS AGAINST FAMILIAR FOES
In their last two games, Tennessee State played some familiar opponents to Liberty. The Tigers played against Austin Peay and at Lipscomb, both ASUN members.
On Dec. 2, Tennessee State defeated Austin Peay, 69-65. After a week off, the Tigers returned to action this past Sunday, Dec. 10 in Nashville against the Lipscomb Bisons, falling 78-71.
LAST D1 NON-CONFERENCE HOME TEST
This will be Liberty’s final Division non-conference home game this season. Following Wednesday night, the Flames will play two home games against non-DI opponents while also facing Utah Valley and Alabama away from Liberty Arena.
The Flames will then open CUSA play after New Year’s, first playing at Western Kentucky on Jan. 6 before hosting Jacksonville State on Jan. 10 in the team’s first ever CUSA home contest.
