Another edition of the ASOR Mailbag! Thank you for submitting your questions and continue to send them in and we will be happy to answer them in our next feature. You can send them to us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, e-mail, or as a comment on the site. We had a ton of great questions this week, so let’s get right to it.
Can we get some Big Ten Football competition going? Go visit the Gophers for a great contest and bring em here for the rematch.
— tom (@olserir) May 21, 2025
We touched on football and men’s basketball scheduling pretty in depth in our last Mailbag. Be sure to go back and check that out if you missed it. But, sure, I’m all for playing a Big Ten football team, especially some of those teams towards the bottom of the league like a Minnesota or Northwestern or Maryland. It could certainly be a competitive game and potential Liberty win.
From Instagram, one of our followers asked, “Favorite sports moment from the past few weeks?”
It has to be something from softball. In Game 6 of the College Station Regional against Texas A&M, the game the Lady Flames ended up losing in extra innings before coming back and winning Game 7, I was literally out of my seat watching KK Madrey’s at-bat with the bases loaded. It was very intense. There were so many memorable moments from that run last week and even in the CUSA Tournament the week prior. I think the answer to the question has to be when Kaylan Yoder recorded the final out with a strikeout to lift the Flames over #1 Texas A&M and into the program’s first ever Super Regional.
Which will happen first, McKay Arena or Richardson stadium?
— JB’s Trap Phone (Alpha Male) (@NotJBsTrapPhone) May 20, 2025
Haha, love it! Both need to happen in due time! It’s pretty remarkable the GOATs we have as coaches currently on campus – the greatest Liberty has ever had in their respective sport. Look at McKay, Richardson, Carey Green, Jeff Thomas, Nikki Parsley-Blocker, Jake Shellenberger
From Instagram, one of our followers asked, “Is there any possibility of a sparky mid court logo for Liberty Arena?”
I love this idea! I think it would look awesome! We have seen the script Liberty and the Sparky logo become much more widespread and commonly used in recent years across Athletics. Maybe when it is time for LA to get a new floor it can be redesigned with the Sparky logo? I’m all for it.
Do you see LU moving to another conference anytime soon?
— Michael (@Tireman4) May 20, 2025
We can certainly hope. I do think there’s a chance a door could open in the AAC soon, especially once some of the fallout from the revenue sharing model starts working its way through college athletics. Liberty will be able to compete at the highest level in the Group of Five from a revenue sharing perspective while some others will struggle to maintain their current level.
Is Liberty softball’s win (well, multiple wins) over Texas A&M the first D1 win over a #1 overall team in program history, across any D1 sport?
— David🇺🇸 (@David5347_) May 20, 2025
There haven’t been many wins over #1 nationally ranked teams at the Division I level, but there have been a couple. The two wins over Texas A&M were the first for softball over a #1 ranked team. Field hockey defeated #1 Rutgers in penalty shots on Nov. 14, 2021 in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament on the team’s way to a national runner-up finish. Then, field hockey defeated #1 North Carolina, 2-1, in overtime in Chapel Hill on Oct. 8, 2023. Also, while not a Division I FBS win over a #1 team, football beat the #1 FCS team in Coastal Carolina, 15-14, in Conway, South Carolina on Nov. 22, 2014. That win clinched the football program’s first and only ever appearance in the FCS Playoffs and just a week later the Flames knocked off #15 JMU before losing to #5 Villanova.
What happened to Brook Roberts?
— landers (@landers25565684) May 21, 2025
The starting Liberty first baseman, Brooke Roberts, did not compete in the Regionals this past week in College Station as Alyssa Henault filled in her spot in the lineup while normal designated hitter Brynn McManus moved into the field at first base. Roberts will not be available for the rest of the season as she is academically ineligible, sources have told ASOR.
From Instagram, one of our followers asked, “When will we get a final answer on Peter and Maughmer? Need to fill those spots with talent.”
I feel pretty confident saying those two will not be playing for Liberty next season. I also think the roster is basically done and Liberty will keep one spot open and add a walk-on.
Will the forums on the website be operational again?
— RtB (@luflamesandfury) May 20, 2025
Unfortunately, we had a malicious attack on our forums a few weeks back. We had to take them down for the safety of the site. After doing some research into the issue, it is going to take pretty close to a full rebuild to get them back operational, and, unfortunately, this is not a cheap fix. We’ve also had difficulty finding someone qualified that is willing to do the work. Factor in that the traffic on the forums has been declining for several years, it makes it difficult to make it worthwhile for the investment to bring them back. Anyone out there with some experience in website development?
