For the first time in Liberty’s Division I era, the Flames tout the NABC District 3 Coach of the Year as Ritchie McKay received the honor as announced on Monday.
The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced their 2019-20 NABC Division All-District teams and coaches which are selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC in NCAA Division I.
Additionally, Liberty senior guard Caleb Homesley was named first-team all-District 3. He was joined on the first team by Radford’s Carlik Jones, Stetson’s Rob Perry, Lipscomb’s Ahsan Asadullah, and Hampton’s Jermaine Marrow.
McKay and Homesley helped guide the Flames to a program record 30 wins as Liberty won a share of the ASUN regular season championship and ASUN tournament championship for the second consecutive season.
McKay was also named ASUN Co-Coach of the Year, his second conference coach of the year honor, as he was previously named the Big South Coach of the Year in 2016.
Homesley is the first Liberty player to be named to an NABC All-District First Team since Anthony Smith was named to the First Team in 2009. He additionally was named ASUN Player of the Year, the second player in school history to do so, joining Jesse Sanders who was named Big South Player of the Year in 2011. Homesley averaged a career-best 15.3 points per game to go along with 5.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.
This is just the second time in Liberty’s Division I era that it has been represented on the all-district teams in consecutive seasons, as Scottie James was a District 3 Second-Team selection in 2019. Jesse Sanders earned NABC all-district honors in both 2011 and 2012.
