As we continue to countdown to kickoff at Virginia Tech on September 3rd, i decided to rank the Most Important Flames. Admittedly, I got this idea from Virginia Tech beat-writer Andy Bitter who’s doing the same thing for the Hokies. This is a list of the players whose success is most crucial for Liberty doing well this season. It’s not a list of the best or most talented Flames, but most important. Keep that in mind as we go through this countdown.
Todd Macon has seen plenty of playing time in his career at Liberty. He redshirted in 2013, then played in 19 games over the past 2 seasons. Macon’s always been the 3rd running back on the depth chart behind Des Rice and D.J. Abnar, but has still had 134 carries for 569 yards in his career. He’s primarily seen increased playing time when Rice and Abnar have succumbed to injuries.
This year, he’s going to be counted on to be the bell cow, every down running back. Behind him, there’s virtually no experience on the depth chart, so the Flames need Macon to stay healthy and be productive. He’s proven he can do it as a reserve in the past, but that’s much different than being the guy that is counted on to do it every game. Macon has the potential to be an all-conference running back and Liberty’s success in 2016 hinges on it.
