Injury update
Here’s your weekly injury report from Coach Gill:
- Francis Bah, Aldreakis Allen, and Dallas Griffiths are out
- Walt Aikens, Wesley Scott, and Greg Pratt are questionable
- Dominique Davis and Dylan Bown will play for the first time in several weeks
Aikens, Scott, and Pratt are all dealing with concussion like symptoms from the ODU game. My guess is they will all play against Coastal unless they suffer a setback during the week.
6 point dog
For the 4th time this season Liberty is an underdog. The Flames are a 6 point home dog according to 5dimes who also set the over/under at 59.5. Not that we condone gambling or anything.
QB recruiting
As you probably saw last weekend, LC Bird quarterback Terrance Ervin has decommitted from Liberty. Coach Gill wasted no time in ramping up his pursuit of J.T. Bradwell of Tallahassee, Florida. Gill was on the sidelines of Bradwell’s game last week, and Bradwell will be taking his official visit to Liberty this weekend. Bradwell has offers from Liberty, Arkansas State, Georgia State, Samford, South Alabama, and South Dakota. Don’t think these two developments are unrelated.
I also saw the comment on the Ervin decommiting story that said “why wouldn’t he decommit. In front of him are one sophomore and two or three freshmen. Please stop recruiting Qbs.” Thank you for your comment Bryan, but I do not agree with you. Most coaches go after 1 quarterback per recruiting class, which I think is a good strategy. Right now Liberty has Woodrum firmly entrenched as starter as a sophomore, and barring any unforeseen developments, he will be the starter the next 2 years. Behind Woodrum are 2 preferred walk-ons, who I’m sure Gill would prefer are career backups, and Stephon Masha who is redshirting this season. If the Flames bring in a QB in the 2014 recruiting class, he will red shirt next season, and will be fighting with the other quarterbacks for the starting job when Josh graduates in 2 years. If the 2014 quarterback, Bradwell for example, wins the job, he will be the starting QB for 3 seasons after 1 year as a red shirt and 1 year as a backup. I think that situation would be ideal.
Men’s basketball notes
The defending Big South champion men’s basketball team had their blue-white scrimmage this week. The blue team won 61-49. Chad Donley and Casey Roberts both shined. Donley finished with 14 points for the blue team while Roberts led the white team with 17. JC Sanders did not participate as he is dealing with an ankle injury he suffered during last year’s Big South tournament. Chris Lang reports the injury required offseason surgery, but Sanders should be ready for the November 8th season opener.
The Big South released the men’s basketball television schedule this week, and Liberty will be televised 16 times this season. The Flames could appear 2 additional times on ESPNU as 2 of their games are part of a group of Big South games of which 1 will be selected for ESPNU.
Big South Media day is this coming Thursday in Myrtle Beach where the preseason coaches poll and all-conference selections will be announced.
Jaguars’ Mike Brown shines against Broncos
Former Liberty quarterback and wide receiver Mike Brown had 4 catches for 49 yards for the Jaguars this past weekend. Brown now has 5 catches for 63 yards this season.
Women’s soccer strong in conference
The women’s soccer team is off to a 5-1-1 start in conference play after their 2-0 win over VMI on Wednesday. With the shutout over the Keydets, the Lady Flames have set a school record for most shutouts in a single season with 10. Liberty will be back in action on Saturday as they head to Boiling Springs to face Gardner-Webb who is 1-6 in conference.
