Injury update
Your weekly football injury update from head coach Turner Gill:
- D.J. Abnar, Francis Bah, Aldreakis Allen, and Dallas Griffiths are all out
- Jibrille Fewell and Dominique Davis are questionable
- Kevin Fogg is probable
Coach Gill did say he is “hopeful” Aldreakis can play next week against VMI, but he didn’t sound very confident in that statement. Hate to see his career, which started with such promise, end this way.
Darrin Peterson tops Big South
Liberty sophomore wide receiver Darrin Peterson leads the Big South in receiving yards per game at 73.1. Peterson has shown
great promise early in his career, and has even drawn comparisons to former Liberty star and current NFL wide receiver Chris Summers. It’s really an intriguing comparison. Summers was listed at 6’4″ and 190 pounds during his sophomore season in 2009. Peterson is listed at 6’2″ and 190 pounds now. Through his first 2 seasons at Liberty, Summers totaled 48 catches for 617 yards and 4 touchdowns. With 5 games to play this season, Peterson has 36 receptions for 572 yards and 5 touchdowns. Darrin’s on pace to have the most productive season for a sophomore wide receiver in program history.
Summers obviously blew up his junior and senior seasons with over 1,000 yards in each en route to rewriting the Liberty receiving record books. He owns career records for 100 yard receiving games, receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. He owns single season marks for receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
In this week’s meaningless stat category….
For the 2nd consecutive season, Liberty has a losing record after 7 games at 3-4. The last time Liberty had consecutive losing seasons after 7 games was in 2005 and 2006. From 1999 to 2006, the Flames had a losing record after 7 games every year. Then from 2007-2011, Liberty had a winning record after 7 games every year.
Liberty currently has a streak of 7 consecutive season finishing with a winning record, the longest in program history. The longest streak prior? 3 from 1988 to 1990.
Alex Ross out 1-2 weeks
Coastal Carolina quarterback Alex Ross is expected to miss Saturday’s game against VMI with a “mild sprain” to his foot. He was reportedly injured in the 3rd quarter against Liberty, but it obviously did not slow him down as he led the Chanticleers to a score on every drive in the 2nd half and overtimes. Ross is 8-0 as a starter at Coastal.
To replace Ross, the Chanticleers are expected to use 3 different quarterbacks in Michael Church, Dalton Demos, and Brian Kass.
Mike Brown
Former Liberty receiver and quarterback Mike Brown had another career day this past week for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Brown hauled in 4 catches for 120 yards including a long of 43. In 3 games played this season, Brown has 10 catches for 183 yards.
Basketball media day
Big South basketball media day was on Thursday in Myrtle Beach. The Flames were selected to finish 2nd in the North Division behind last season’s division champ High Point. John Caleb Sanders and Davon Marshall were both selected to the preseason 2nd team all-conference.
The Lady Flames were predicted to finish 1st in the conference for the 16th time in 17 years. Point guard Emily Frazier was selected to the preseason all-conference team.
Men’s tennis duo wins regionals
Liberty men’s tennis duo of Shea Thomas and Jorge Azuero captured Liberty’s first ever regional doubles title. They knocked off the #17 doubles pair in the country and #2 seed in the tournament, Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini of Virginia Tech. Thomas and Azuero now advance to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships held November 7-10.
