Aikens hopes to play professionally

Track member killed
In a tragic story, Liberty track and field team member Darius Dixon was killed in a car accident earlier this week. Dixon, a freshman at Liberty, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in Franklin County where the car he was riding in struck a tree. Dixon is originally from Chesapeake, Virginia where he graduated from Western Branch High School and helped his team win the 2013 Virginia AAA state title.

Aikens selected to Medal of honor Bowl
Walt Aikens has been selected to play in the inaugural Medal of Honor Bowl to be played in Charleston, South Carolina on January 11th, 2014. The MOH Bowl claims itself as “South Carolina’s Premier College All-Star Football Bowl Game.”

 

Coastal beats Montana
The Chanticleers continue their successful season after beating Montana 42-35 in Missoula. With the win, Coastal moves to 12-2 on the yar and becomes the first Big South football member to reach the quarterfinals. CCU led 42-21 at the start of the 4th quarter before Montana tacked on 2 touchdowns in the final 9 minutes of the game. Quarterback Alex Ross was 16/21 passing for 202 yards and 3 touchdowns. Ross also rushed for 123 yards. Coastal advances to face 2-time defending FCS national champion and #1 North Dakota State on Saturday at noon on ESPN. In an odd twist, NDSU head coach Craig Bohl was announced as Wyoming’s new head coach. Bohl will stay on at NDSU for as long as their season continues.

Campbell loses to DII Chowan
Campbell lost to Division II Chowan 67-65 in overtime on Tuesday Night. The Camels gained their first lead of the game at the start of overtime, and trailed by as much as 13. Campbell shot 38% from the field and was outrebounded by Chowan. An embarrassing loss for the Camels and the Big South.

Lady Flames defeat Radford in Big South opener
The Liberty women’s hoops team defeated Radford this past Saturday 70-49 in both team’s conference opener. The Flames were led by Ashley Rininger’s 18 points and 15 rebounds while holding the Highlanders to just 34.5% shooting. Liberty outrebounded Radford 53-24. With the win, the Lady Flames improve to 4-5 on the season.

Sasser Cup Standings through Fall sports
The Sasser Cup Standings through the fall sports were released earlier this week. Liberty leads the overall standings with Coastal in a close 2nd. The Flames also lead the women’s all-sports award, and are currently 3rd in the men’s all-sports award behind High Point and Coastal.

Dominique Jones activated by Chiefs
Former Liberty tight end and men’s hoops guard Dominique Jones was promoted to the 53-man roster by the Kansas City Chiefs on December 7th. Jones has played in 11 total games in the NFL over the past 3 seasons and has 3 receptions for 42 yards. He spent much of the last 2 years with the Indianapolis Colts. Jones played for Liberty in 2008 and 2009 and totaled 9 receptions for 67 yards and 2 touchdowns while with the Flames. After the 2009 season, Jones transferred to Shepherd where he finished his collegiate career.

Coastal is the 1st Big South member to advance to the FCS quarterfinals

Wake Forest names new head coach
Long-time Wake Forest head football coach Jim Grobe resigned recently, and the Demon Deacons have tabbed Bowling Green coach Dave Clawson to be Grobe’s successor. Former Liberty head coach and current Richmond coach Danny Rocco was thought to be in the running; however, Ball State coach Pete Lembo and Clawson were the only 2 to interview for the opening.
