Signing Day is Wednesday
With signing day coming up in just a few days, things are moving at a rapid rate. This past week saw commitments from Rion Davis, Dontae Duff, and Malik Matthews following their official visits last week. We’ve also seen several names commit elsewhere including defensive lineman Dorian Kithcart who committed to Mercer. Kithcart was supposed to take an official visit to Liberty last weekend, but that visit never happened. With this being the final weekend before signing, we’ve heard two names that are scheduled to take official visits this weekend – Khylil James and Javon Frazier.
The Flames currently have 12 verbal commitments for the Class of 2015. Be sure to check back frequently this week as we will have plenty of signing day coverage.
Men’s hoops update
The Flames fall to 0-9 in Big South play after losing to Radford & High Point this week. Theo Johnson has stepped up as Liberty’s leading scorer in both of these games, scoring a career-high 19 against Radford and 12 against High Point. The Flames will look to avoid falling to 0-10 for just the 2nd time in school history when they host Charleston Southern on Saturday.
Women’s hoops update
The Lady Flames bounced back from their first conference loss with wins over Campbell & UNCA this week to move to 10-1 in Big South play. Liberty now stands alone in first place in the conference standings, 1 game ahead of 9-2 High Point. LU travels to High Point on Saturday to face the Panthers.
Baseball update
Practice started for Liberty’s baseball team this past week with the season’s first game scheduled for two weeks from today. The biggest news around the opening week of practice is Liberty center fielder and closer Ashton Perritt moving to the weekend starting rotation. Perritt is currently slated to be the Saturday starter, with Parker Bean to get the nod on Fridays and Shawn Clowers on Sundays to start the year. Jared Lyons will open the season as the closer. Also of note, Baseball America released their preseason top 25 poll with Liberty checking in at #25.
Flames’ NFL draft prospects
There has been some mild discussion regarding Jacob Hagen and his chances at the NFL since Liberty’s season ended in early December, but nothing like we saw a year ago with Walt Aikens. Released just this week is a small college positional projection by Josh Buchanan. In it, he ranks Jacob Hagen as the 3rd best prospect at free safety from small colleges. He also projects Hagen as a 7th round draft pick or free agent. Greg Ray, Toby Onyechi, Dominique Davis, and Nick Sigmon are all ranked on this list as well.
