McKay picks up transfer
Anthony Fields, a point guard from Bradley, will be transferring to Liberty. Fields graduated from Bradley and will be eligible immediately. He spent the past 3 seasons at Bradley where he played in 44 games, making one career start. Fields’ 2014-15 season was cut short in February due to a knee injury. Fields originally signed with Wake Forest, and he transferred from Wake to Bradley after his freshman season in 2011-12. He has one season of eligibility remaining.
Bonds to transfer
The strange story of Braxton Bonds continues to take unexpected turns. It was reported earlier this week that Bonds’ has been granted his release and will be transferring from Tennessee. He was forced to redshirt the 2014-15 season, after abruptly leaving Liberty last summer while taking summer classes. Last week, news surfaced of Tennessee self reporting NCAA violations with regards to impermissible calls made from former Tennessee basketball coach Donnie Tyndall to Bonds last year.
2015 MLB draft
3 Flames were selected in the 2015 MLB draft held this week, Jared Lyons, Ashton Perritt, and Alex Close. Lyons was selected in the 9th round by the Oakland A’s while Perritt was taken in the 24th round by the Texas Rangers. Alex Close was selected by the Kansas City Royals for the 2nd consecutive year, this time taken in the 26th round. Liberty also had 3 high school seniors that signed to play at Liberty next season that were also selected in the MLB draft. Ryan McKenna was selected in the 4th round by the Baltimore Orioles, Nathan Trevillian was selected in the 22nd round by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and DJ Artis was selected in the 40th round by the Boston Red Sox. Trevillian has already announced he plans on skipping college while we haven’t had any official word from McKenna or Artis yet.
2-star QB commits
Coach Gill and the Flames picked up their 2nd commitment in the class of 2016 with a commitment from Rudiger Yearick. Yearick is a 2-star rated quarterback prospect from Indian Trail, North Carolina who picked Liberty over offers from Cornell, Harvard, and Yale. Yearick joins offensive lineman Ethan Crawford as the 2 early commitments to Coach Gill.
