Men’s hoops to play in Cancun Challenge
It was announced this week that Coach Layer and the men’s basketball team will compete in the Cancun Challenge in November. The Flames will travel to Cancun for a two game tournament November 25-26. Liberty’s exact pairing has not been released, but the other teams they could be paired with are Elon, Morgan State, and North Florida.

The Challenge includes 2 games prior to the trip to Mexico. We know 1 game will be against Virginia Tech in the first meeting between the schools in seven  years. The final game will be against either Miami (OH), Northern Iowa, or Northwestern.

Not much has leaked out so far regarding the 2014-15 basketball schedule, but we will keep you updated as word trickles out.

Final Directors’ Cup standings
If you’re not familiar with the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup, it is an annual ranking of the best overall athletic programs in college athletics based upon national finishes. The final standings for the 2013-14 season were released this past week. Liberty finished at #145 with 108 total points. Other institutions of note:

Sports Network Preseason All-American teams
The Sports Network released their preseason All-American teams this week. The Flames placed 2 defensive players on the 2nd team in linebacker Nick Sigmon and safety Jacob Hagen. A league record 7 Big South players were selected including 1st teamers O.J. Mau of Gardner-Webb and Quinn Backus of Coastal Carolina.
