QB Coach Joe Dailey hasn’t decided on a backup QB

Training Camp update
In an interview with Alan York earlier this week, Coach Turner Gill gave an update on the first week of training camp. He highlighted the position battle for backup quarterback behind Josh Woodrum. Coach Gill said “it’s not etched in stone that Javan (Shashaty) is the backup” and the staff will decide about a week before the UNC game who is the backup. Redshirt freshman Stephon Masha is battling with Shashaty.

Gill also said Monday’s scrimmage at E.C. Glass High School was “our best scrimmage overall” since he’s been at Liberty.  He continued by noting the team “got a lot more quality reps” with nearly 70 live plays. The idea of 2 off-campus scrimmages this month was born this summer when the coaching staff reflected on their 0-5 record in nonconference road games the past 2 years.

Football signee Javon Majors update
As we reported in our Thursday Links & Tweets post, football signee Javon Majors is expected to be in camp later this week and will be redshirted this season, according to sources. Majors missed the first week of training camp as he was working on his eligibility status with the NCAA.

Flames a 27.5 point dog
The Liberty-North Carolina game opens on 5dimes with the Flames a 27.5 point dog. That’s about where I expected the line to open. Last season, the line on the Liberty-Kent State game opened at 31, which was clearly too high. In the Flames’ last 3 meetings against ACC opponents, Liberty has lost by an average of 15 points.

Basketball Scheduling Update
Furman released their basketball schedule Thursday, and as expected, the Flames will host the Paladins in a return trip from last season’s matchup. Liberty fell to Furman, 86-83, on December 20th last year.  This year’s game is scheduled for December 1st inside the Vines Center.

Liberty will also play host to Randolph College on November 14th. The Flames and Wildcats, cross-town rivals, met last year in Liberty’s season opener. The Flames won 74-53. We continue to update the 2014-15 basketball schedule as dates are reported.

Liberty Twist on Sunday Night Football
Hopefully you got to catch some of the NFL’s 2014 Hall of Fame Game this past Sunday as there was a heavy Liberty twist on the game. 3 former Flames played including Giants running back Rashad Jennings who had 23 yards rushing and 20 yards receiving. Chris Summers and Dominique Jones each played for the Bills. Be sure to keep track of all 6 Liberty alums competing in the NFL this season on our Flames in the NFL page!
