S, Elijah Benton, 23, was a focal point in Liberty’s defensive backfield, especially in the school’s first two seasons as an FBS member. Back in late April of 2020, Benton signed with the Cleveland Browns as an UDFA.
When Benton signed, he was given a 3-year deal for $2.295 million, but only $50,000 guaranteed. It is going to be up to him to make almost all of the money in his contract, as that is normal for undrafted rookies to get almost completely unguaranteed deals.
He has been able to see a familiar face at training camp, as former Liberty LB, Solomon Ajayi also signed with the Browns after going undrafted.
If cut, Benton and Ajayi both can become cases of players that slipped through the cracks. This offseason may put many UDFA rookies in situations where they are likely to get the short end of the stick, due to, lack of practices and no preseason games. Benton may make an intriguing player to keep an eye on, as he may get picked up to be put on a team’s practice squad if he’s cut.
The deadline for teams to cut their roster down to the final 53-man roster in the NFL is at 3 p.m. on September 5.
