Liberty finally puts an end to their losing streak, beating Campbell 79-59 Saturday afternoon.
- The Flames end their 7 game losing streak, all conference games. Liberty had not won since January 25th when they defeated Presbyterian 65-53.
- The 20 point margin of victory, is Liberty’s largest this season against a Division I opponent.
- The first half of this game was eerily similar to the first meeting between Campbell and Liberty. Both games saw the Flames jump out to a 13 point lead at halftime. In the first meeting, back on January 14th, the Camels used a 13-0 run coming out of the break to make the Flames fight until the final whistle for the win. So, when the Camels knocked down consecutive 3-pointers early in the 2nd half to cut the lead to 9, Dale Layer quickly called a timeout to refocus his troops. It worked, and Campbell never seriously threated the Flames in the 2nd half.
- Joe Retic went over the 30 minutes played mark for the 2nd consecutive game. He finished with 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists.
- As has been discussed on numerous occasions this season, Davon Marshall has been struggling with his 3 point shooting all season. He hit his first 3 3-point attempts against Campbell to help the Flames jump out to a double figure lead. Marshall paced the Flames with 15 points.
- Liberty was led by 5 scorers in double figures, Marshall, Antwan Burrus (14), JC Sanders (13), Drew Smith (12), and Tomasz Gielo (11).
- The Flames had 16 assists and just 8 turnovers in the game.
- The win was just the 2nd road win for the Flames this season in 13 road contests.
- Liberty struggled all of last season before putting it together in the road finale against Radford en route to a 17 point victory. The win would propel the Flames to 5 straight wins and ultimately the Big South Tournament Championship. Coach Layer and company hope the same will be true for the Campbell win.
