For the third time this season, Darius McGhee is our Liberty men’s basketball Player of the Week.
As Liberty swept the two-game series against Jacksonville, McGhee played a major role. While the guard’s first game was solid as he registered 12 points and 5 rebounds, McGhee really went off in game two. On Saturday against the Dolphins, McGhee had a career-high 25 points along with 3 assists and 3 rebounds. As he has been for the majority of the season, McGhee was great from behind the arc, hitting three three-pointers, including a double-clutch buzzer-beater at halftime that was SportsCenter Top 10 worthy. McGhee also went a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line as he played a team-high 69 total minutes in both games.
McGhee has been named our ASOR POTW more than anyone this season (3), and only two other Flames have received our POTW honor (Blake Preston and Chris Parker). McGhee has consistently been Liberty’s leading scorer throughout the season and still holds that title with an average of 13.9 points per game. The preseason First-Team All-ASUN selection leads the team in minutes per game (29.1) and is second on the team in three other categories: rebounds per game (4.6), steals per game (0.8), and assists per game (1.7).
McGhee has stepped up as a leader this season and has been giving the Flames consistent production all year. McGhee and Parker have arguable been the best backcourt duo in the ASUN this season, as Liberty’s extraordinary guard play has put them in a first-place tie in the conference alongside North Alabama and Bellarmine at 6-2 in ASUN play.
McGhee and the Flames will travel back home, as they prepare for a series against North Florida. The first game between the Flames and Ospreys will be on Friday, February 5th. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m., and you can watch the game on ESPN+.
