Our ASOR Player of the Week, for quite possibly the last time is Darius McGhee. The Flames had their ASUN four-peat hopes crushed at the hands of Bellarmine Saturday, falling 53-50 in heartbreaking fashion. Nevertheless, Darius McGhee excelled, doing everything he could to help the Flames win.
In Liberty’s win over Lipscomb in the quarterfinals, McGhee scored 26 points, while tacking on four rebounds and two assists. Against Bellarmine, McGhee scored 21 points, dished out three assists, and secured three rebounds. With his two 20+ point performances, McGhee finished the season scoring over 20 points in all of Liberty’s games except eight.
Darius McGhee had a season for the ages. The senior finished the 2021-22 campaign with averages of 24.6 points per game (second in the nation), 4.5 rebounds per game, and 3.6 assists per game while maintaining a field goal percentage of 45.6%. The two-time ASUN Player of The Year became Liberty’s three-point king while also moving into the top five on the Liberty Men’s Basketball all-time scoring list. McGhee is still the national leader in total points scored (by 136 points) and is responsible for the two highest individual scoring performances from the entire college basketball season.
It was a true pleasure to watch Darius McGhee play these past four years on The Mountain. Without a doubt one of the greatest to ever put on a Flames uniform, the postseason honors should continue to roll in for the Roxboro, North Carolina native. According to Coach McKay, the Flames have been invited to two postseason tournaments, but the team has not decided whether they want to participate or not. If the Flames choose to participate and have a good run, McGhee should have a shot at breaking the all-time NCAA single-season three-point record currently held by Steph Curry (McGhee is 20 three-pointers behind). We may get the chance to see McGhee play in a Flames uniform again, but if not, Flames fans will have to just sit back and appreciate the greatness that we witnessed in Darius McGhee.
