This week, we caught up with Steve Irvine of the Blazer Victory Podcast to ask a few questions about UAB football. Be sure to give them a follow on Twitter @BlazerPod.
UAB canceled football in late 2014, returned to the gridiron in 2017, and now is one of the best teams in the CUSA. Can you give a concise overview of what happened and how UAB has managed to rebound so quickly?
Steve Irvine: The simple answer is Bill Clark happened. Dig deeper and it’s much more complex. I think what happened is the university and Birmingham metro community stood up, along with an incredibly loyal head coach, to turn this program into what many thought they could be for years. The coaching staff found talented players, many of them rather hidden gems, and molded them into what has become the most consistent program in the conference.
What are UAB’s strengths?
SI: Winning football begins up front and UAB is excellent up front on both sides of the ball. The defense is blessed with depth and a whole bunch of playmakers. Offensively, they’ve found ways to be balanced. Gerrit Prince has a national tight end best five touchdowns.
What are UAB’s weaknesses?
SI: Penalties have been a problem. Turnovers have been a problem at times. Take away the Georgia game, though, and the Blazers have been pretty darn solid.
What is the biggest change, good or bad, from last season’s team?
SI: I think the biggest change is not having a running back who can carry the load from start to finish. Spencer Brown never seemed to get tired. That’s not to say UAB has a concern at running back. Jermaine Brown, Dewayne McBride and Lucious Stanley are three very capable running backs. However, none have Brown’s durability.
How will UAB win the game?
SI: Quarterback Dylan Hopkins continues his efficient playmaking, the running game produces and receivers give the offense some big chunk plays. The defense avoids drive extending penalties and keeps Malik Willis from turning into Superman.
How will UAB lose the game?
SI: Penalties pile up, the Blazers turn the ball over more than three times and missed assignments turn into big play scores for Liberty.
What matchup are you most excited to watch?
SI: Eleven guys on defense (at a time) against the athleticism of Malik Willis. I understand the Liberty offense is more than just Willis but he’s so much fun to watch. UAB has to control his big plays.
