Quick-hit notes following Liberty’s 38-14 loss at Army:
- The Flames had their chances to make this game, but were unable to string together multiple successful series with the exception of the 3rd quarter.
- Defensive coordinator Robert Wimberly switched things up on the defensive side of the ball, as he went to a 3-4 front. It helped keep Army’s triple option in check in the first half, holding the Black Knights to just 17 points. But the option attack to its toll on the Flames throughout the 2nd half, as Army ended up with 38 points and 449 rushing yards.
- After going scoreless in the first half, Liberty scored a touchdown on its first two possessions of the 2nd half to cut Army’s lead to 24-14. Then the defense stopped Army and forced a punt. As Buckshot and the offense had gotten into a rhythm, the Flames were again driving into Black Knights’ territory. On 2nd and 15, Buckshot just narrowly overthrew Damian King on what would have been a sure touchdown. Liberty then decided to run the ball inside which was stopped for a short gain. Coach Gill then called on his punt team. From there, it was all downhill. Questionable play calling on that third and 4th down calls.
- Buckshot was 19-of-37 passing for 307 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Army was able to keep his top receiver in check, as AGG was bottled up for just 3 receptions for 33 yards.
- After serving a 1-game suspension, Damian King returned to the lineup and led the Flames with 8 receptions for 172 yards and 1 touchdown.
- Liberty had some success running the ball, rushing for 110 yards and 4.8 yards per carry. Kentory Matthews led the team with 82 yards while Peytton Pickett added 46.
- Juwan Wells led the team with 13 tackles.
- Two players were ejected for targeting as Liberty’s punter Aidan Alves tackled a returner and was then ejected. This forced Aaron Peart to take over all kicking duties, from kickoffs, to field goals and punts. Austin Lewis was ejected for targeting in the 2nd half, and will also be forced to sit out the first half of Liberty’s next game.
- Several defensive players seemed to get dinged up throughout the day, including Jessie Lemonier who left the field and did not return. Hopefully, the team will remain relatively healthy from the game.
- The Flames return to action next Saturday, back at Williams Stadium to take on its first of 2 FCS opponents in Norfolk State.
