A few quick-hit notes following Liberty’s 35-17 win over Buffalo:
- Coach Freeze was on the sidelines for the first time as a Liberty head football coach, albeit from a stand 10 yards behind the field of play and elevated a few feet above the field. He alternated from sitting in a leather office chair to standing with the aide of a walker.
- The team was much different with Freeze on the sidelines, particularly Buckshot Calvert and the offense. Liberty had totaled 14 points in the first two games and had that many points just 3 minutes into the 2nd quarter.
- For the 2nd straight week, Liberty won the toss, chose to receive the ball, and quickly marched down the field to score a touchdown and take a 7-0 lead.
- Without question, Calvert played his best game of the season. He finished the game 23-of-30 passing for 325 yards and 4 touchdowns.
- Why anyone single covers Antonio Gandy-Golden is beyond me. The Bulls did so on several occasions and he was burned every time, making highlight worthy plays multiple times. AGG finished with 8 receptions for 174 yards and 2 touchdowns.
- Making his first start of the season and getting his first extended playing time, LB Brandon Tillmon had himself a game. He started in the place of Waylen Cozad who missed the game as he is still recovering from a concussion. Tillmon finished the game with a game-high 11 tackles.
- S Elijah Benton returned to action this week after missing the Louisiana game last week. He was 2nd on the team with 10 tackles. Jessie Lemonier also had a very good game, as the senior defensive end finished the game with 9 tackles and 3 sacks.
- The defense allowed over 400 rushing yards to Louisiana last week, but held up much better against a solid Buffalo ground game. The Bulls finished the game with 206 rushing yards.
- We had been saying all week to stay with team through the 0-2 start, and with this win things look very good right now. Liberty is home the next two weeks in two games they will likely be favorites in, hosting FCS Hampton next week and then New Mexico the following week. The Flames then hit the road for a trip to New Mexico State before returning home for an open date and hosting FCS Maine. Momma always said don’t count your chickens before they hatch, but Liberty could get in a groove and win a few games in a row here.
