A few thoughts following Liberty’s first loss of the season:
- The Flames did what they needed to on defense early to stay in the game as Liberty’s defense held West Virginia to field goals on their first two drives of the game.
- Missed opportunities were the story of the game in the first half for LU. From an early fumble on 4th and 1 to three missed field goals to a missed pass to Darrin Peterson that could have gone for 6. This led to a 20-0 Mountaineer lead at halftime when the Flames could have had as many as 17 points. Game over.
- What a tough showing for John Lunsford. He missed all three field goals badly. You have to think any NFL draft aspirations he had are dashed. Hopefully he can rebound for a successful senior season. He finally made a field goal from 49 yards in the 4th quarter.
- For the 2nd straight week, Darrin Peterson saw little action in the 2nd half. Hopefully he is fine and will be ready to go next week against Montana. Petey finished with 4 receptions for 64 yards.
- Des Rice had plenty of touches finishing with 11 carries for 37 yards and 5 receptions for 16 yards. It’s great to see him back on the field after missing last season.
- After a virtual no show and a couple drops in Week 1, Dante Shells rebounded with a very productive afternoon. He finished with 4 catches for 70 yards. The Flames will need him this season.
- Liberty has several weapons at receiver as several guys had productive days including Shells, B.J. Farrow and Zac Parker.
- The defense played pretty well for as explosive as West Virginia’s offense can be.
- We will finally get a true test of how good the 2015 Flames will be next Saturday against Montana! Can’t wait!
