A few quick-hit notes following the Flames’ 45-35 win over Kennesaw State:
- Playing at home for the first time in over a month, the Flames put a halt to their 2-game losing streak.
- Kennesaw State jumped on the board first as they scored on their 6th opening drive this season. They’ve only played 7 games. The only time the Owls did not score on their opening drive was last week against Gardner-Webb.
- KSU has allowed 2 touchdowns in the first quarter this season and they have both come in losses. The Owls also allowed a touchdown to Dayton in the first quarter.
- The Flames continue their impressive play in the first quarter of their wins. Liberty has now scored 42 points in their 4 wins compared to just 3 points in their 4 losses.
- Darrin Peterson with three touchdowns in the first half from 33, 39, and 80 yards. He tied the school’s career record for touchdown receptions held by Chris Summers. Summers was in attendance for the game. Peterson finished with 4 catches for 164 yards and 3 touchdowns.
- Josh Woodrum tied his single-game high with 4 touchdown passes. He had one that was a beauty in the 3rd quarter as he avoided the sack, rolled left, and found Farrow in the end zone. It was also Farrow’s first career touchdown catch. Woodrum finished 15/21 for 230 yards and the 4 TD passes.
- Penalties really hurt Kennesaw, finishing with 11 for 105 yards. This doesn’t include several others they had declined.
- Liberty got touchdowns instead of settling for field goal attempts. This was something Coach Gill mentioned as being a priority this week. Every time Liberty got inside the 30 yard line they scored a touchdown.
- Liberty’s defense held up very well against the triple option attack the Owls presented. After KSU went 76 yards on their opening drive, the Flames’ defense held Kennesaw to 76 yards the rest of the first half. Of course, the Owls put up some yards and points in the 2nd half. KSU finished with 420 yards and the 35 points.
- The 45 points Liberty scored was the most KSU has allowed, besting the 31 points they gave up to Dayton.
