A few quick hit notes following Liberty’s loss to Monmouth, 56-39:
- The Flames have now lost 4 straight games, the first 4 game losing streak since the first 4 games of the 2012 season, which opened Turner Gill’s Liberty career.
- The first half of the game shaped up very similarly to last week’s game against Kennesaw State with Liberty marching down the field for a quick score to take a 7-0 lead. That was followed by 21 unanswered Monmouth points to give the Hawks a 21-7. The Hawks push their lead to 35-13 late in the 2nd quarter.
- After allowing 498 rushing yards to Kennesaw State last week, the Flames were gashed early and often by Monmouth rushers. The Hawks rushed for 364 yards and averaged 8.5 yards per carry. Eric Zokouri had 193 rushing yards and Pete Guerriero had 162 rushing yards, the first time in school history Liberty has ever allowed multiple 150+ yard rushers on the same day.
- Liberty fell behind by as much as 30 points, 49-19, in the 3rd quarter, but mounted a comeback scoring 20 straight points to bring it within 10 at 49-39 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The Flames were unable to complete the comeback as they failed to score in the 4th quarter.
- With all the offensive fireworks, Buckshot and his receivers put up good numbers. Calvert threw for 408 yards and 5 touchdowns. Antonio Gandy-Golden and BJ Farrow each went over 100 yards receiving and combined for 3 touchdowns.
- Liberty will attempt to halt their losing streak next Saturday at Gardner-Webb. The Runnin’ Bulldogs are 1-5 on the season before their game Saturday night at Kennesaw State.
