Liberty falls to New Mexico State, 49-41. Here’s our quick hit notes:
- Well, it looks like Liberty will need to score 50+ points to win a game this year. That’s what it would have taken tonight as the Flames’ came up short in an offensive shootout.
- Coming down the stretch, the Aggies scored a touchdown on 4 of 5 drives to seize control of the game and push their lead back out to two scores. The Liberty defense couldn’t get a stop when it needed one. The Flames gave up 573 yards of offense, 402 through the air against a redshirt-freshman making his 2nd career start. Liberty has given up 400 yards or more in 4 straight games. NMSU was averaging just 16 points a game entering the game, with a season high of 27 in their first 5 games.
- On the other side of the ball, the Flames put up 41 points on 97 plays and finished with 524 yards of offense. That wasn’t enough though.
- Buckshot finished the game 31/54 passing for 365 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Not a bad night, especially considering the pressure he faced all night. Calvert was sacked 5 times on the evening. He was sacked from behind and fumbled in the first quarter, which led to NMSU’s first touchdown of the game. The Aggies’ 1 interception also led to a touchdown.
- DJ Stubbs had a very good game, finishing with 11 catches for 115 yards. He also had a 60 yard punt return which should have gone to the house. AGG also had 115 yards and 1 touchdown on 7 receptions. Frankie Hickson rushed for 155 yards and 1 touchdown on 24 carries.
- Perhaps the play of the game, the Flames had cut the lead to one score, at 42-35, with over 10 minutes left in the game. Liberty had forced a 3rd and 1 and had the NMSU rusher corralled in the backfield by several defenders, only to see him bounce outside for a 66 yard touchdown run to put the Aggies back up by two scores.
