Liberty knocks off the Camels, 55-52. A few thoughts:
- It’s the first time the Flames have won back to back game over Division I opponents since February 2014.
- LU is now 3-3 in games where it has led at the half, compared to 2-10 when trailing at halftime. This game was much different than any game Liberty has had this season, as it led virtually from the opening tip.
- The Flames were 2-28 against DI teams during the calendar year 2015, the worst mark in school history. Under Coach McKay, the Flames are 2-1 in 2016.
- After having the 3 best games of his young career, Caleb Homesley did not attempt a field goal. He still made an impact on the game, finishing with 3 points and 5 rebounds.
- Liberty was 5/10 from 3-point range in the first half, but failed to hit a 3-pointer in the 2nd half, finishing the game 5/16.
- Ryan Hiepler went 8 consecutive games playing 11 minutes or more, as well as starting in 6 of the 8 games. McKay has shortened his bench and Hiepler has been one of the biggest culprits. He has played in 10 total minutes the last 2 games, both Liberty wins.
- The Flames attempted 22 free throws against the Camels, the 2nd most on the season and the most against a Division I team. Liberty attempted 25 free throws against Central Penn.
- John Dawson again led the way for the Flames, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in 36 minutes. He did have 5 turnovers and Coach McKay was quick to point that out to him in the media room after the game. Dawson jokingly responded, “yeah, I know.”
- Liberty’s lone senior, Anthony Fields, has really asserted himself during this 2 game win streak. He scored 11 points against Coastal Carolina as he connected on 3 of his 4 3-pointers. Against Campbell, Fields he succesfully attacked the rim and got to the free throw line, finishing with 10 points.
- The Camels are still winless at the Vines Center, falling to 0-9. Campbell is 1-10 all-time in games played at Liberty with their lone win coming in the first meeting between the 2 squads, in 1976.
- The 52 points Campbell scored were the fewest points they have scored this season. The Camels scored 54 points on November 21st in their 3rd game of the season. They hadn’t scored below 60 in their last 12 games including 4 gmaes in which they scored 83 points or more.
- The Flames now hit the road for a 2 game trip in South Carolina, facing Charleston Southern Thursday night and Winthrop on Saturday.
