Liberty leads from start to finish, knocking off Campbell, 72-40. Here’s our rapid reactions:
- The Flames got off to quick start for the 2nd consecutive game, opening up a 10-2 lead at the first media timeout. Liberty raced out to a 16-0 lead over Longwood early in the game Thursday night. The Flames weren’t as hot on offense against the Camels as they were against the Lancers, keeping the game much closer until the final 8 minutes of the game as Liberty began to separate itself.
- It’s the 2nd straight game the Flames have knocked off a Big South opponent by 30+ points. No confirmation on this yet, but that has to be the first time in school history with consecutive 30+ victories over Big South opponents, not to mention both of them coming on the road.
- McKay’s Pack-line defense is reaching new heights in its 2nd season. The Flames continue to hold its opponent under its scoring average. The Flames force their fair share of turnovers and force its opponents to take tough shots. The Camels finished the game shooting just 26% from the field and 16% from 3. The 40 points Campbell scored are the fewest by a Division I opponent against Liberty. The previous low was 42 by Hampton on 12/16/96.
- Lovell Cabbil loves playing against Campbell. He had a career-high 21 points in the first meeting a couple weeks ago, and finished today’s game with a game-high 16 points. He also led the team with 6 rebounds and 3 steals.
- The Big South’s leading scorer and one of the top scorers in the country, coming in ranked 6th in points per game, Chris Clemons was held to 12 points on 4/16 shooting. He was averaging 23.4 points per game entering the contest.
- Liberty has now won 4 straight games against Campbell.
- The Flames picked up its 6th road win, all coming consecutively to open Big South play. They haven’t won 6 road games in one season, whether in conference or out of conference, since the 2008-09 season. The 6 Big South road wins ties a school record which was set during the 1996-97 season. That team went 6-1 in Big South action.
- Ryan Kemrite didn’t score a point until the 12 minute mark of the 2nd half. He did score 5 straight points on back-to-back possessions to push Liberty’s lead to 15 points with 11:34 to play. Kemrite, who passed Seth Curry for 40th place on the Flames’ all-time scoring list, finished the game with just the 5 points on 4 field goal attempts.
- Redshirt-freshman Myo Baxter-Bell has improved his offensive game as the season has progressed. He’s becoming a legitimate threat in the paint. Coach McKay usually draws up the first play or two of each half for Myo, but he then seems to disappear throughout much of the game, partly due to foul trouble on many occasions. He finished the game against Campbell with 6 points on 2/3 shooting.
- Other top stat lines include John Dawson’s 9 points, 6 assists, and 3 rebounds. Brock Gardner had 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz finished with 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.
- The Flames return to the Vines Center for a 7pm game against Presbyterian on Tuesday.
