Liberty with the win over Coastal Carolina! A few thoughts on the game:
- Wow! I almost forgot what it felt like to win. It ends a 12 game losing streak dating back to November 21st. It’s also the Flames’ first win over a Division I team this season and first win over a Division I team since February 26, 2015. It’s Liberty’s first road win in nearly 2 years, with the last win away from the Vines Center coming February 22, 2014.
- John Dawson hit the go ahead 3 pointer with 11 seconds left. The Flames trailed by 2 at the time. What a clutch shot. Dawson led the team 18 points on 7/14 shooting from the field.
- Lovell Cabbil hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with 47 seconds left in the game. A clutch play by a true freshman on the road in conference play. Cabbil had a great all-around game, finishing with 11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals.
- The Flames made 12 3-pointers on a season high 33 3-point attempts. 6 different Flames made a 3.
- Caleb Homesley continued his strong play as the true freshman 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. It’s only the 3rd time he’s scored in double figures as a Flame, with 2 of the past 3 games being in double figures.
- Recovering from having stitches in his tongue during the Asheville game last Saturday, Evan Maxwell saw less playing time than he’s accustomed to. He finished with 5 points, 4 rebounds, and was just 1/5 from the charity stripe.
- Coach McKay is now 5-0 all-time as head coach against the Chanticleers dating back to his first stint as head coach at Liberty when he was 4-0.
- The Flames tied a season low with 7 turnovers against the Chanticleers. They also had just 7 turnovers against William & Mary in the 3rd game of the season. Liberty has struggled with turnovers all year including 19 against Asheville on Saturday.
- Liberty loves playing Sun Belt teams or teams headed to the Sun Belt.
- We’re no longer in last place in Big South play! LU improves to 1-3 in conference while the Longwood Lancers lost tonight to fall to 0-4.
- This win should do a ton for this young team’s confidence moving forward.
- The Flames return to action Saturday in the Vines Center as they host Campbell at 2pm.
