Liberty defeats Longwood, 93-52. Here’s our rapid reactions:
- The Flames improve to 2-15 all-time at Willett Hall, having won 2 straight including a 1 point win a year ago.
- Liberty finishes the first half of Big South play at 7-2 and a perfect 5-0 mark on the road in league play. It’s the first time in school history the Flames have started 5-0 on the road in league play.
- Coach McKay’s squad raced out to a quick 16-0 lead and led by as many as 31 points in the first half. The game was really never in question as the Flames took control of the game from the onset. Liberty scored a season-high 50 points in the first 20 minutes of the game.
- Liberty was hot from the floor, making 8 of their first 10 3 point attempts, and shot 17/30 from 3 on the evening. The 17 made three pointers is a season-high. Quite the turnaround from the poor shooting performance against Winthrop on Saturday.
- The 93 points scored by the Flames are a season-high and the most points scored in the past 2 years since McKay has returned to Liberty. It’s the most points scored by a Liberty team since the Flames scored 94 points against Central Penn on December 19, 2014.
- The Flames were led by 4 double figure scorers. Ryan Kemrite paced the team with 19 points. Lovell Cabbil added 16, Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz had 13, and John Dawson finished with 12 points.
- Brock Gardner had one of his best games with 8 points, a career-high 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.
- The first half was eerily similar to the Radford game a few weeks ago where the Flames jumped out to a big lead. In that game, the Highlanders chipped away at Liberty’s lead in the 2nd half, eventually forcing overtime. That wasn’t the case against Longwood, as Liberty immediately stretched their lead beyond 30 points at the beginning of the 2nd stanza.
- The 7-2 start to conference play is tied for the 2nd best start in school history.
- The Flames have a quick turnaround as they travel to Campbell for a game at 2pm.
