Liberty drops its 9th consecutive game, falling to St. Francis Brooklyn, 64-55, on Sunday afternoon. Here’s a few thoughts on the game:
- As the packline is designed to, the Flames forced St. Francis into taking a lot of 3-pointers. Of the Terriers 52 field goal attempts, 30 were from long range. Problem is, they connected on 40% of their 3-pointers. This enabled them to overcome 34.6% shooting from the field.
- Liberty controlled the game for the first 30 minutes, leading for all but 27 seconds. But, as has been the case for the Flames the past 4-5 seasons, they don’t know how to win. As we all expected, this team will have to suffer through many growing pains, but those growing pains hurt while you’re suffering through them.
- John Dawson again proved to be a valuable part of the Flames’ team in just his 2nd game. The Marquette transfer led the team with 15 points and recorded his first double-double with 10 rebounds. He fouled out near the end of the game.
- Liberty was again beat at the free throw line as the Terriers attempted 23 free throws compared to the Flames’ 12.
- Evan Maxwell did not have his most productive game today. He finished with 10 points and only 2 rebounds while shooting 3/6 from the floor. He had a couple of “bunnies” he should have easily made that rimmed out.
- Lovell Cabbil struggled shooting the ball against St Francis, finishing with 6 points on 3/13 shooting.
- Ryan Kemrite had one of his better games after struggling since early in the season. Kemrite had 7 points and 4 rebounds including a couple of offensive rebounds that led to 2nd chance points.
- A. C. Reid suffered an injury in the first half and did not return. He only played 6 minutes, finishing with 5 points.
- It’s hard to focus on road struggles when the team has 84 losses the last 4 seasons, but Liberty hasn’t won on the road since February 22, 2014. During that time, the Flames have lost 24 straight away from the Vines Center.
- It won’t get any easier. Liberty faces VCU in Richmond next Sunday before heading to South Bend to take on Notre Dame on December 29th.
