In order to be eligible for an NCAA redshirt, football players who have not yet used a redshirt can play in a maximum of four games during the season. The minimum number of games played, instituted prior to the 2018 season, includes any potential conference championship, bowl or playoff games. Any player exceeding four games will automatically be ineligible for redshirt status.
Liberty has used several true freshmen this year as regular role players on both sides of the ball. But, Freeze has said in the past that he and his staff closely plan and project the redshirt situation constantly throughout the season.
Freshmen who have already exceeded the 4-game minimum are: Shedro Louis (kick returner/wide receiver; 10 games),Tayvion Land (nickel; 10), Kei’Trel Clark (corner; 12), Chris Megginson (defensive back; 12), Micah Glaize (safety; 11), and TreShaun Clark (defensive end; 12).
Other contributing freshmen who have played in three or fewer games — leaving open the option of playing in the bowl game and an eventual redshirt for 2019 — include: Demario Douglas (wide receiver, 3 games played), Treon Sibley (running back, 2), and Malik Caper (linebacker, 2).
Some have played in exactly 4 games including wide receiver C.J. Yarbrough, defensive end Brayden Monday, linebacker Aubrey Williams, and JUCO transfer defensive lineman Devonte Lloyd. Freeze says he plans on holding those guys out of the Cure Bowl to preserve their redshirt.
“That would be nice,” Freeze said when asked directly about holding Yarbrough out of Saturday’s game. “Man, he’s going to be a really good talent. Demario (Douglas) has one more game to play. He will get considerable snaps in this game. He’s had a great week of practice thus far. C.J. is ready to go, we just would hope that we can get through the game with our other side guys.”
