Update:: Downing has been named vice president for athletics at Sterling College, his alma mater.
Liberty special teams coordinator and tight ends and fullbacks coach Scott Downing has retired, according to sources. Downing informed former Liberty head coach Turner Gill of his intentions prior to the season finale against Norfolk State.
Downing was hired by Coach Gill on February 1, 2016 and has held the position of special teams coordinator since that time. He was originally brought in to coach the running backs, but his responsibilities shifted to the tight ends and fullbacks following the 2016 season.
During his time with the Flames, he coached numerous all-conference selections on special teams as well as a couple of FCS All-Americans. Kicker Alex Probert was named to the HERO Sports FCS Freshman All-America honorable mention listing while long snapper Hunter Winstead was named to the STATS FCS All-America 3rd team in both 2016 and 2017.
Prior to joining Gill at Liberty, Downing had over 30 years of NCAA coaching experience including 7 years as a head coach and 14 as a coordinator. He helped guide teams to 17 bowl appearances. Some of his coaching stops included head coach at Northern Colorado for 5 seasons, and assistant stops at Tulsa, Nebraska, Purdue, and Wyoming.
