The Flames’ linebacking corps lost a considerable amount of talent over the off season with the graduation of seniors Nick Sigmon, Dylan Lewellyn, Andrew Jauch and Bobby Partilla. Fortunately, some familiar names are ready to step up into starting roles and wreak havoc on opposing offenses.
SAM
1. Avery “A.J.” James (So., 6-0, 180)
After playing thirteen games (including one start) at safety last season, James is listed as the starting strong side linebacker coming out of the spring. While only a sophomore, A.J. has proven he is capable of contributing on defense and he did so as a freshman. There could be a bit of a learning curve for him as he transitions to the linebacker spot.
2. Jordan Williams (R-Jr., 6-1, 190)
MIKE
1. Jimmy O’Grady (Sr., 6-0, 225)
Senior Jimmy O’Grady will be getting the start at middle linebacker for the Flames this season. In limited action for Liberty last season (9 games), O’Grady recorded 29 tackles, 15 unassisted and 2 for a loss.
2. Dexter Robbins (Jr., 5-11, 220)
Robbins found the field in all fourteen games last season, ending the season with 42 tackles, 26 unassisted and 2 for a loss. Despite not being listed as the starter, the Flames will find ways to get this talented linebacker on the field.
3. Zach Schreiber (Sr., 6-1, 210)
WILL
1. Nick Newman (Jr., 6-4, 210)
2014 was a breakout season for Nick Newman. He played all fourteen games (4 of which were starts) and ended year with 79 tackles, 47 unassisted. Only Jacob Hagen (108, 69UA) had more. Newman will continue to be a play maker and provide veteran leadership to the defense.
2. Miles Hunter (Sr., 5-11, 200)
Hunter was able to see the field in thirteen of fourteen games last season, recording 12 tackles, 6 unassisted.
3. Lucas Irons (R-Fr., 6-0, 205)
Irons will have his first opportunity to contribute for the Flames. He was a 2-star prospect out of high school and has the potential to develop into a nice player for Liberty.
