Just the sight of Williams Stadium lit up for spring practice is enough to ignite some excitement for what next football season may hold for many Flames fans. Fortunately, Flames Nation will be checking in on spring practice over the next few weeks to try to keep you up to date on what we may see in the 2014-15 season.
Here’s a couple notes from what we’ve seen thus far:
Offense
- Kendall Couamin and Will Johnson split the time at tight end on the first team, a spot that multiple guys are competing for.
- Redshirt freshman running back, Joshua Smith, showed off some impressive shiftiness and looks like a guy the Flames will be trying to find a way to get the ball to.
- QB Stephon Masha has some impressive zip on the ball but doesn’t seem to have the same accuracy as Javan Shashaty.
- Shashaty also displayed some impressive wheels during one particular run, he definitely possesses the ability to make plays on the ground.
- D.J. Abnar got as many first team plays as Des Rice yesterday, and it looks like they’ll be a one-two punch this year even after Rice’s breakout campaign.
Defense
- We saw Nick Newman and Charles Williams at safety with the first team. Other first team regulars were CB Kenny Scott, LB Bobby Partilla, and LB Nick Sigmon.
- On the D-line Erwin Dessources was very impressive and found his way into the backfield against the first team on a few occasions.
Special Teams
- Trey Turner and John Lunsford split the time punting yesterday, both had some impressive boots.
- We saw about 5 or 6 guys try returning some punts, but expect these duties to be handled by D.J. Abnar or Gabe Henderson next year.
