When the Walter Payton Award was given out Monday night for the most outstanding offensive player in the FCS, Old Dominion Quartback Taylor Heinicke was ecstatic to receive the honor. However, Stony Brook’s Miguel Maysonet was also honored with a second place finish in the final vote tally. “I wasn’t disappointed,” Maysonet said. “I had a feeling Taylor would win it all. Being here was a humbling feeling. It was exciting to be in the last three. In my mind, that’s winning in my eyes to be here with these two great football players. Awards come and go . . . This award isn’t going to define who I am and what I did for Stony Brook football.” Maysonet is the Big South’s all-time leading rusher, and will move on to the NFL Draft this Spring. It is the highest finish for a Big South football player in the Payton voting. Several others have been named to the watch list, including Liberty Running Back Rashad Jennings.
Liberty held Maysonet to 74 yards on 25 carries in a 28-14 Flames victory on November 10th, one of his lowest outputs of the season. The fact that the Flames defense significantly slowed one of the top players in the nation should be looked at as another accomplishment of the 2012 season.
