Reigning Big South Tournament MVP Davon Marshall hopes to guide Liberty to its 2nd consecutive Big South Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. Alongside John Caleb Sanders, Marshall helps give Liberty, arguably, the most talented and explosive backcourt in the Big South.
In his first season with the Flames, the junior college transfer averaged 13.6 points and 2.81 assists per game while shooting an impressive 43% from behind the 3-point line. Marshall set a Liberty school record with 107 made 3 pointers on the season including a conference tournament record 17 during the Big South tournament.
Marshall’s hot 3-point shooting was not an anomaly as he shot nearly 46% from 3 during his sophomore season at Monroe College. A staggering 80% of Marshall’s field goal attempts were of the 3-point variety. Davon led the team in true shooting percentage at over 61% on the season. Like John Caleb Sanders, Marshall’s biggest improvement can come on 2 point field goals. Last season, only 12% of his field goal attempts were non-layup 2 point attempts. On these attempts, Davon shot just 31%.
Davon is not a true point guard though he was forced to play point much of the season. With the addition of junior college transfer Joe Retic, the Flames could go small allowing both Sanders and Marshall more time playing off the ball. This will Davon more opportunities for clean looks rather than having to constantly create shots for himself and others. The inside presence of Antwan Burrus will also go a long ways in taking the opponent’s concentration off Marshall.
