The Sun Belt officially announced on Tuesday their intent to begin the 2020 football season over Labor Day weekend with members playing an 8-conference game schedule with an option “for each member to add as many as four non-conference opponents, beginning with Week Zero.”
Liberty is scheduled to face one Sun Belt team in 2020, Louisiana-Monroe, on Oct. 10.
The Flames have had just one game officially canceled from the 2020 slate to this point, as the Sept. 12 home opener against North Carolina A&T will not be played since the MEAC has canceled fall sports. Liberty’s three games against ACC opponents could remain on the schedule as Virginia Tech, NC State, and Syracuse’s plus one opponent in their schedules. The Virginia Tech game will have to be scheduled for a different date as the ACC will not begin playing games until Sept. 12, the game between the Hokies and Flames had been scheduled for Sept. 5.
Liberty is still awaiting official word on several games on the 2020 schedule, including from C-USA members Western Kentucky, FIU, and Southern Miss, MAC member Bowling Green, and FCS and Southern Conference member Western Carolina. The Flames are also scheduled to play FBS Independents UConn and UMass.
According to Stadium’s Brett McMurphy, the C-USA is expected to move forward with a plan similar to the Sun Belt.
