IAN MCCAW HIRED AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
It was announced this week that Liberty has hired on Ian McCaw as the new athletic director. This hire shocked much of college football world given the situation McCaw comes from. In May, McCaw resigned from his AD post at Baylor University admits a sexual assault scandal concerning ignored/hidden rape allegations.
“I can’t stress how excited I am about Ian McCaw at Liberty University,” President Falwell said. “I don’t think there could be a better fit between a university and an athletic director. I have such high hopes and expectations for the future of Liberty athletics, and I believe that we’re going to be able to go places that we’ve not yet been in so many ways, and we’re honored to have Ian join us as our athletic director.” Falwell continued, “It was really an easy decision, and we’re so proud he chose Liberty.”
Of course, this hire has stirred great controversy for Liberty considering their striving for strong, upright moral values and most view McCaw’s placement to be hypocritical of that.
In response to the outrage, Liberty President Jerry Falwell Jr. stated:
“If he made any mistakes at Baylor, they appear to be technical and unintentional.”
WAGNER RELIEVED OF DUTIES
Offensive Line Coach Dennis Wagner was relieved of his duties this past week. Wagner joined the Liberty coaching staff in 2012 when Head Coach Turner Gill was brought on. It is no secret that the offensive line was one of the weaker position groups on the team this season, much in part due to the injury bug. Through 11 games, Liberty started 8 different combinations on the line and allowed 30 sacks.
NORTH ALABAMA
Kendall Rodgers reported that North Alabama will make the transition from DII to DI and join the Big South in football starting in 2018. Should this report hold true, that will be two new teams joining the conference in football at the start of the 2018 season (Campbell and North Alabama). Barring any other moves, there would then be 8 total football teams in the Big South.
North Alabama currently competes in the Gulf South Conference and has been there since its formation in 1970. They have won the GSC the last 3 years in a row and have appeared in the NCAA Division II Team Playoffs all but two years since 2003.
BASKETBALL
The Flames currently sit at 4-3, their 3 losses coming at the hands of VCU, Indiana, and William & Mary. Through 7 games, they are averaging 68 points and allowing 66 points to opposing offenses. Caleb Homesley leads all Flames with 13.4 points a game.
