As Liberty gets prepared to take on the VMI Keydets tomorrow night, it has us thinking who is Liberty’s biggest rival in basketball right now? Here’s the case for the Liberty/VMI rivalry:

  • The all-time series is 14-13. Can’t get much closer than that.
  • The teams have split the regular season series in 2012, 2011, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003.
  • Since VMI joined the Big South in the 2003-04 season, Liberty holds an 11-7 edge in the series.
  • In 3 consecutive seasons, one team ended the other’s season in the Big South Tournament (2007, 2008, 2009).
  •  A former Liberty player, has been an assistant at VMI for the past 8 seasons (Jason Allison). Allison played at Liberty from 1995-1998. Liberty won the Big South regular season title in 1997.
