The 2015 Liberty football senior class will be remembered as one of the most accomplished classes in program history. While their senior season did not reach the lofty expectations placed on it, this class had some pretty remarkable moments. Here’s a look back at the top 10:
Runner-up: All the close calls.
From their freshman year (and Gill’s first game) in 2012 at Wake Forest, to the 2013 games against Old Dominion and Coastal Carolina, to the 2014 game against Richmond, this class nearly had enough moments for a top 15 list.
10. 2013 56-14 win over #16 Charleston Southern
Josh Woodrum called it one of his most memorable games. The Flames completely dominated a CSU team that was on the verge of becoming a Big South champion. It catapulted the program to take the next step in 2014 by making the playoffs.
9. Comeback against Gardner-Webb in 2012
It was the first time many in this class came on the scene. The Flames were down 21-3 before a D.J. Abnar kick return got the momentum shifted.
8. The Villanova playoff game
It wasn’t a win, but the Flames came very close to knocking off the #5 team in the country to advance to the quarterfinals.
7. Win over Georgia State in the Georgia Dome
One of two FBS wins (both against the Sun Belt) for this senior class.
6. 2012 win over #6 Stony Brook
They were just freshman, but they stepped up on the big stage for the first time in their career.
5. 2015 win over #7 Montana
It vaulted the team into the top 10 for the first time in recent memory, and did so against a Montana team just a couple weeks removed from knocking off 3-time defending champ North Dakota State.
4. 55-48 double overtime win over Appalachian State
The 2nd FBS win for this senior class coming in dramatic fashion over an Appalachian State team that finished the season 6-2 in the Sun Belt.
3. Win over #4 Coastal Carolina on ESPNEWS in their final game
They go out winners with an impressive performance on a national stage.
2. Program’s first ever playoff win by beating #15 JMU
They proved they belonged in the playoffs and did so by beating the hottest team in all of FCS.
1.Knocking off #1 Coastal Carolina to clinch the program’s first ever playoff appearance
Chima’s block catapulted the Flames over the hump its been trying to hurdle for years.
