Baylor Prep Begins
The Flames are beginning to transition from training camp mode to preparation for the Baylor game on September 2nd. Coach Gill said the team began working on some special teams drills for the Baylor game during practice on Tuesday, and will go “full throttle” into Baylor prep on Thursday.
Liberty has 4 more practices this week and 3 practices next week before the final walk through and game on September 2nd.
3rd Scrimmage Focused on Situational Play
The team had their 3rd scrimmage of training camp this past Saturday, and Coach Gill said the scrimmage focused on situational play. The team ran specific packages designed for the 4 minute drill, 2 minute drill, goal line offense and defense, 2 point plays, and other situations. Gill said the offense was a little bit ahead of the defense, but there was no cause for concern on either side of the ball. “We had some good things happen on both sides of the football, and I think we’re headed in the right direction.”
Injury Update
After being held back throughout much of training camp, linebacker Solomon McGinty is finally a full go and got some valuable, live action reps in the scrimmage on Saturday.
“Solomon got in this Saturday, no issues,” Coach Gill said. “Great to see him involved at the linebacker position. It was good to get him some 11 on 11, full contact cut blocks going at him and all those things. There are no issues. He is full go and ready to roll.”
Outside of Ernst Andersen, who we previously reported has been forced to retire, Mitchell Hurtado is the only current Flame that will not be available for the Baylor game due to injury. Hurtado joined the team during training camp. The 6’3″, 290 pound defensive lineman is originally from Anaheim, California where he attended Loara High School. He comes to Liberty from Fullerton College.
