After a 24-7 loss at Duke, the Virginia Tech Hokies will travel to Lynchburg for the first time to play the Liberty Flames. The Hokies and Flames will play in Williams Stadium at 12PM on Nov 19. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and LFSN Radio (The Journey 88.3 FM).
The Hokies’ and Flames’ football programs have only played twice before. In 2016, the Hokies beat the Flames 36-13. In 2020, the Flames won 38-35, giving each team one win in the series.
The Hokies are currently 2-8 for the 2022 season. Their two wins were early in the season and back-to-back against Boston College and Wofford. Both Boston College and Wofford are presently 3-7.
Virginia Tech began their season with a loss at Old Dominion, a team Liberty beat 38-24 this season. This year will mark the second season the Hokies have missed a bowl game since 1992.
Head coach Brent Pry is in his first season as head coach for the Hokies. Pry began his coaching career in 1992 and last served as Penn State’s defensive coordinator from 2016 to 2021.
For the 2022 season, Pry hired Tyler Bowen as the Hokies’ offensive coordinator. Bowen and Pry coached together at Penn State from 2018-2020. Bowen has struggled to lead the Hokie’s stagnant offense. In his last press conference, Pry publicly voiced that the Hokies’ offense has struggled to compliment their defense.
Going into Saturday’s game, the Hokies offense averages 19.4 points per game. If you take away the Hokies’ 41-29 loss at Pittsburgh, the Hokies’ only average 12.5 points per game. The majority of Virginia Tech’s offensive yards have been won through their passing game.
The Hokies’ defense averages 25 points allowed per-game and 375 yards allowed per-game. Tech has allowed 237.9 passing yards per-game and 137.2 rushing yards per-game.
