After winning the NFC East in 2020 with a 7-9 record, the Washington Football Team has its sights set on repeating and making a deeper playoff run in 2021-2022. Now that the NFL Draft is complete and the full 17-game regular-season schedule has been released, let’s take a look at the odds the Washington Football Team can make some noise in the 2021 season and beyond.

Overall Washington Football Team 2021 Season Outlook

This looks to be a year full of optimism and possibility for the Washington Football Team even though the 2022 super bowl odds are at +6600. The defense returns several young playmakers, including budding stars Chase Young and Montez Sweat on the defensive line, 2020 leading tackler Jonothan Bostic at LB, and Kendall Fuller at CB. As a unit, they allowed the 4th fewest points in the NFL in 2020 and were certainly the team’s strongest unit.

Offensively though, they struggled as a whole, ranking just 26th in scoring. They do have some young bright spots, including WR Terry McLaurin and RB J.D. McKissic. The retirement of QB Alex Smith leaves some major question marks, though. If the Washington Football Team struggles as a whole, it will likely be due to a weak passing game and an overall lack of production and ability to move the ball effectively.

2021 Major Draft Picks

In last month’s NFL Draft, the Football Team took a balanced approach, alternating between defensive and offensive selections. None of their picks drastically influenced their overall season odds and they didn’t make any big splashes in terms of marquee trades.

They went defense in round one, selecting Jamin Davis out of Kentucky to bolster an already strong linebacking corps. In round two, they chose offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi from Texas. He should provide some much-needed help to an offensive line that allowed 50 sacks in 2020, tied for second-most in the league. Both players look to make an immediate impact and could find themselves in starting roles as early as week one.

2021 Schedule And Key Matchups

With the NFL Schedule release just a few days ago, we now have a much clearer picture of what each team is up against. According to CBS Sports, Washington’s 2021 strength of the schedule ranks near the middle of the pack, tied for the 15th most difficult. Their 2021 opponents had a combined record of 136-134-2, which comes out to an overall winning percentage of .504.

Outside of their 6 division matchups against the Cowboys, Giants, and Eagles, Washinton will play each of the NFC South teams: The Saints, defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers, Falcons, and Panthers. They face a tough NFL Week 1 matchup, hosting the LA Chargers and young QB Justin Herbert. According to Virginia Sportsbooks, the WFT are 1 point underdogs. The Moneyline is set at WFT +102, LAC -116. The over/under is set at 45.

Interestingly, most of their division matchups come at the end of the year, where, starting in Week 13, they play the Cowboys, Eagles, Cowboys, Eagles, and Giants. This difficult stretch will likely decide their 2021 fate. If they can remain injury-free and play their best football late in the year, they stand a good chance to repeat as NFC East Champions, or at the very least, qualify for the playoffs as a wildcard berth.
