The Flames fall to Iona 87-69, and drop to 1-10 on the season. Liberty is still winless against Division 1 competition. Here is what we learned:
- “They are who we thought they were.” Iona came into the game as a 3-point shooting team, and they continued that trend last night. The Gaels shot 18-41 from behind the arc, allowing them to pull away in the 2nd half.
- The Flames shot a respectable 35% behind the arc, but were unable to keep pace with Iona in the 2nd half, going 25% for 3 in the final 20 minutes.
- Liberty went 16-28 at the free throw line. That’s 57%, and that’s unacceptable at this level of basketball.
- Coronado showed some promise inside, recording the first double double of the season for Liberty.
- The Flames’ were unable to slow the Gaels’ dynamic duo of Jones and Armand, who combined for 47 points.
- John Caleb Sanders appeared revived, leading the Flames with 16 points.
Liberty has a pair of non-Division 1 match ups coming, against Milligan and Union College the 21st and 28th respectably. The Flames’ next shot at a Division 1 victory comes on New Year’s Eve against Western Carolina. That game will be LU’s final tune up before Big South Conference play begins January 5 against UNC-Asheville.
