Liberty heads into New Year’s Eve still searching for their first Division 1 win of the season against the Catamounts of Western Carolina. After perhaps their best 20 minutes of the season against Union, the Flames will look to build on that performance on the road against a Southern Conference opponent. Here’s what you need to know:
- WCU sits at 4-8 overall, and 2-0 in the SoCon so far this season.
- Liberty is 1-1 all-time against Western Carolina
- The Cats made it to the SoCon finals a year ago, losing to Davidson in OT.
- Western has played both Howard and Georgetown, 2 of Liberty’s early season opponents. They defeated Howard 69-67, and lost to Georgetown 81-68.
- The Cats lost a tight game to #13 Illinois on the road, 72-64
- The team is led by 6’2″ Guard Trey Sumler, who is averaging more than 16 PPG, and 42% 3 point shooting.
- Western currently sits at #219 in the RPI, while Liberty has settled to #342 of 347 Division 1 programs.
