Liberty football’s average home attendance increased in 2019 to 17,047. This is up from the 16,282 average in 2018.
The Flames expanded their football stadium to hold a capacity of 25,000 fans in 2018, prior to the expansion the stadium capacity was 19,200. With the Flames heading to the FBS the need to increase the size of the stadium was there.
This places Liberty in the 110th spot in home attendance in FBS football. Not bad when this was only year two of LU being in the FBS. They are beating some schools that have been in the FBS for a much longer time.
Here are some schools that recently made the switch from FCS to FBS like the Flames and their average attendance this season:
- Appalachian State 23,703
- Georgia State 14,580
- Coastal Carolina 10,306
Here are some other FBS Independent schools:
- Notre Dame 79,525
- BYU 56,597
- New Mexico State 14,249
Here is how Liberty ranks in the state of Virginia:
- Virginia Tech 61,562
- Virginia 40,327
- Old Dominion 20,021
It is encouraging to see the team make its first bowl game this year and the increase of fans coming to the game. It will be fun to track the attendance next year and see if continues to rise.
