Flashback 5 seasons ago. Liberty was coming off one of their best seasons in school history with 23 wins behind standout freshman Seth Curry and head coach Ritchie McKay. The Flames looked like they were on their way to being a contender at the top of the Big South for the next several years. Then Curry transfers. Then McKay’s long time friend Tony Bennett is named head coach just up 29 North at Virginia. McKay could not resist Bennett’s urge to join him as an assistant, and the rest is history.
Now, just a mere 5 years later, could the Flames find themselves in a similar situation? Sure, the situations are different. Liberty is coming off consecutive 20-loss seasons and head coach Dale Layer’s seat is getting hot. But with Virginia Tech’s hiring of Marquette head coach Buzz Williams, Layer could be headed to the in-state ACC school as an assistant.
Layer was Williams’ top assistant for a season at Marquette before he came to Liberty in 2009. Williams also served under Layer as an assistant coach at Colorado from 2000-2004.
Will this happen? At this point, who knows, but Layer and Williams are sure to have that conversation if they haven’t already.
Inside info says Layer turned in his resignation last night.
Now we need to hire Jeff Van Gundy
